John Kovac Managing Partner

Prior to his current position with Aspire Consulting, Mr. Kovac was the Practice Manager at EPS Technology. As a Practice Manager, John was responsible for budgeting/forecasting, business development, recruiting, and the overall strength of the PeopleSoft/Oracle practice.

Mr. Kovac's professional experience began at Accenture. Since 1997 Mr. Kovac has held various positions within the Human Resources/Compensation/Benefits and Systems Implementation fields. Mr. Kovac's professional experience has ranged from Lead Developer to HRMS Expert to PeopleSoft/Oracle Practice Manager. Mr. Kovac is a highly motivated, people-oriented professional with strong communication skills that have allowed him to effectively work with all levels of an organization.

Mr. Kovac has a vision to strengthen Aspire Consulting through placing an emphasis on quality assurance for Aspire's clients. John embodies the values of Aspire Consulting by holding himself and Aspire consultants to the highest of standards with the goal of executing solutions as flawlessly as possible.

Mr. Kovac received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the University of Missouri - St. Louis.

We sat down with John and asked him some questions.
  • Why did you decide to come to UMSL?
  •        An offer of a position on the UMSL baseball team was the initial pull towards UMSL for me.  While attending UMSL I also realized that the return on the investment for the four year bachelor's degree was rather impressive compared to other universities.  I am glad I made the decision to attend UMSL.
  • Why did you pursue a career in information systems?
  •        I met with Andersen Consulting in the spring of 1997 out of the Career Placement Department from UMSL.  The members of Andersen seemed very impressive.  I was intrigued by all of the possibilities from the organization.
  • What college classes did you find most useful to your career?
  •        My career took a different turn coming out of the university experience as I studied Economics at UMSL.  The critical thinking and problem solving habits that I obtained proved to be very useful in my career.
  • If you were in college today, what courses would you take?
  •        I would certainly pursue a more balanced curriculum of finance/accounting and MIS.
  • How did you continue your education after your first degree?
  •        Andersen Consulting offered a wide array of training courses throughout my 5 1/2 years there.
  • How did you find your first job?
  •        I found my first job from a posting in the Career Placement Department at UMSL.
  • In what non-academic activities did you participate in college that you would recommend to others (and why)?
  •        I was a pitcher on the UMSL baseball team.  We went to the College World Series my freshman year (1993).  I loved playing the sport but realized that I wasn't going to have a profession in athletics.
  • How would you change your career if you had it to do all over again?
  •        I am very happy that my career has ended up the way it has.  I am in my dream position as a Partner with a local IT Consulting company, Aspire Consulting.  The only thing to change would be a better work/life balance earlier in my career.
  • What advice would you give to someone just starting in the field?
  •        Be open-minded to all positions, be willing to travel, work very hard and don't be afraid to take on the assignments that no one else wants.
  • Look into your crystal ball. What do you see changing in the IS field in the future?
  •        Everything is cyclical really.   Some companies will want to go more off-shore with their IT talent while others bring more IT functions in house.  I do believe the current movement is to outsource IT functions in order to reduce overhead and resource costs in a challenging economic environment.
